Malgré l'absence apparente de signes vitaux, le sujet est parfaitement éveillé et ses perceptions sensorielles sont normales, bien qu'il soit incapable de réagir à tout stimulus. Il apparaît désormais clairement que la cataplexie est la survenue d'un état quasi-identique à l'état physique du sommeil paradoxal, mais avec un état mental de veille.
